John Paul II went on the road and earned the first postseason win in program history with a 28-14 victory at Greenwood Christian on Friday in the first round of the SCISA 2A playoffs.
Zach Doe rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries and Freddie Aiken added 86 yards and a TD on 14 attempts to lead a powerful rushing attack for the Golden Warriors. Melik Frost added 58 yards on nine carries and racked up 19 tackles and a key fumble recovery to anchor the defense.
The Hawks grabbed the early lead on a 21-yard pass from Jack Alvarez to Carter Johns, but Doe’s 16-yard touchdown run tied it at 7 before halftime. Doe punched in a 3-yard score to give the Warriors the lead in the third quarter, but the Hawks answered to tie it on Alvarez’s 3-yard run.
Doe’s 54-yard run three plays later set up Aiken’s 4-yard TD, and Doe forced a fumble that Frost recovered on the next series to set up Doe’s 23-yard TD run to seal it.
JPII (6-4) will host Robert E. Lee Academy, a 39-26 winner over top-seeded Hilton Head Prep on Friday, in the semifinals next week.
