Play in the main draw got underway Tuesday at the USTA Pro Circuit’s $15,000 Shipyard Cup at Van Der Meer Shipyard Resort.
Three of the top seeds who were in action Tuesday advanced — including top-seeded Bianca Turati and No. 2 seed Nadja Gilchrist, a Smith Stearns Academy and Heritage Academy alumna – while No. 8 seed Salome Devidze of the nation of Georgia was upset by American Allura Zamarripa 6-3, 6-1.
No. 3 seed Michael Bayerlova and No. 6 seed Rasheeda McAdoo also advanced, though Bayerlova needed three sets to get past Argentina’s Guillermina Naya.
Top-seeded Barbara Gatica and Rebeca Pereira survived a three-set match in the opening round of the doubles draw, and No. 2 seeds Bayerlova and McAdoo advanced in straight sets.
Play is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
