HSFB: Rebels Roll At SECIS Kickoff Classic

Thomas Heyward Academy can claim something no other team from South Carolina has done – the Rebels are coming back from the SECIS Kickoff Classic with a victory.

Even without star running back JR Patterson, who is sidelined with a sore back, the Rebels steamrolled Brookhaven (Miss.) Academy on Saturday, winning 49-28 in their season opener in Montgomery, Ala. It’s the first win for a SCISA school in the third annual event, which features independent schools from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Quarterback Jake Masters scored two rushing touchdowns and caught a two-point conversion, Trey Pusha rushed for two scores, Bobby Payne had a rushing touchdown and returned an interception for a score, and Zack Black caught a touchdown pass for the Rebels, who led 35-14 at halftime. CJ Cleland was 5-for-6 on PATs.

The Rebels (1-0) travel to Hilton Head Christian Academy on Friday.
