Hilton Head Island’s Daniel Azallion fired a 7-under-par 65 Monday to grab a three-shot lead after the first round of the South Carolina Golf Association’s Junior Championship presented by the Heritage Classic Foundation.
Azallion made six birdies and an eagle with only one bogey on Dataw Island’s Cotton Dike Course, giving him a three-shot cushion over Lancaster’s Trey Crenshaw.
Azallion credited hitting a lot of fairways and greens and making birdie putts as the difference in his round.
“I knew I was playing well when I was able to come back from my bogey with an eagle on No. 7 and follow that with a birdie on No. 8,” Azallion told the SCGA.
Azallion tees off No. 10 at 1:03 p.m. for Tuesday’s second round. The 54-hole event concludes Wednesday.
