May River’s boys ran their winning streak to 13 games with a 5-3 victory over Class 2A power Academic Magnet on Saturday.
The top-ranked Raptors took an early 2-0 lead before James Lucas put in a header off a Joel Fleek assist in the 20th minute to get the Sharks on the board. Fleek assisted on Mikey Chappelear’s goal 13 minutes later to draw May River even.
Academic Magnet regained the lead late in the first half, but Fleek converted a penalty kick in the waning moments of the half to knot it at 3.
Chappelear blasted a shot from the right flank to convert a Chris Pineda assist and put the Sharks ahead for good in the 73rd minute, and he completed the hat trick three minutes later to cap the scoring.
Tony Rodriguez made six saves to make the lead stand up for the Sharks.
“The Raptors gave us a very good challenge, taking advantage of their size early on,” May River coach Misael Garzon said. “I’m proud of our boys not giving up after going down 2-0 early in the game. The boys did an excellent job in the second half containing their attack and maintained pressure on their defense.”
May River (17-1) hosts Battery Creek for a region match at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
