The USCB baseball team split its season-opening doubleheader with visiting Milligan (Tenn.) on Friday.
The Sand Sharks couldn’t come up with the clutch hits they needed in a 3-1 loss in the opener, but they rebounded for a 7-2 victory in the second game.
In game 1, Cole Hamilton went 3-for-4 in his USCB debut, Chris Vazquez was 2-for-4, and Alex Murphy drove in the Sand Sharks’ only run. USCB loaded the bases twice but only managed one run, spoiling a strong start from Zac Burke.
The timely hits came In game 2, as the Sand Sharks pushed across runs in each of the first four innings to build a 7-0 lead. Kelvin Brito was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Keith Olmo was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Hamilton had an RBI and scored twice to lead the offense. Nick Constan earned the win with 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
The rubber game of the series is set for noon Saturday at Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville. The Sand Shark softball team also opens its season at home Saturday with a doubleheader against Columbia College starting at 1 p.m.
