May River’s girls basketball team held on for a season-opening 37-31 win over visiting John Paul II on Friday.
Casey Sullivan and Chynna Sneed scored eight points apiece, Jordan Bigham added seven, and Emma Peluso chipped in six for the Sharks.
Tkai DeVore collected 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Golden Warriors, while Ayannah Thompson added seven points and four boards, and Jasmine Hamilton pulled down eight rebounds.
May River led 19-17 at halftime before shutting out JPII in the third quarter to take control.
The Sharks (1-0) travel to Beaufort High on Saturday, while JPII (2-1) travels to St. Vincent’s on Monday.
