Bryson Nimmer of Bluffton carded a 1-under-par 68 on Wednesday and is tied for 22nd after the first round of the 56th Northeast Amateur, which is being played at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island.
Nimmer had a fairly uneventful first round, making three birdies and two bogeys on the par-69 track, which is playing at 6,732 yards. He is five shots off the lead after the first of four rounds.
Starting on the back nine, Nimmer birdied the par-4 10th to start his day but gave a shot back at the par-3 12th. The Clemson standout bounced back with a birdie at the par-4 13th and moved to 2-under with a birdie on the par-3 third hole before a bogey at the par-3 eighth left him at 1-under for the day.
Nick Voke of New Zealand shot 6-under-par 63 to grab the early lead by one shot over Collin Morikawa. China’s Cheng Jin, who will defend his Players Amateur title next month at Berkeley Hall in Bluffton, shot 5-over and is tied for 68th.
Nimmer tees off at 12:40 p.m. for Thursday’s second round.
