May River’s Shelby Gourley captured a state title in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Hilton Head High and May River claimed top-four finishes in the team standings at the SCHSL Class 4A Swimming State Championships on Saturday at the North Charleston Aquatic Center.
Gourley edged AC Flora’s Hannah Montgomery for the 100 breast title, finishing in 1:05.75 to beat the runner-up by nearly half a second. It was the highlight of a big day for Beaufort County swimmers, as the Seahawks placed third and had two individuals and two relays earn All-State honors while the Sharks were fourth and matched HHIHS with two individuals and two relays notching All-State recognition with top-three finishes.
Eastside ran away with the team title with 608 points with Region 7-4A powerhouse Lucy Beckham (427) in second, followed by the Seahawks (338) and Sharks (236).
Skylar Bruner led the Seahawks with runner-up finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, and she anchored the runner-up 200 free relay team that also included Isabella Pozos, Katie Lyons, and Eli Summa. Lyons placed third in the 200 IM and just missed another All-State nod with a fourth-place showing in the 100 breast. Pozos, Summa, and Bruner also joined Brooks Risher on the 400 free relay team that placed third, and Summa had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 200 and 500 free.
Gourley’s big day continued with runner-up finishes in the 200 medley and 200 free relays. She was joined by the trio of Mia Yemec, Hannah Yemec, and Lily Bostwick on both All-State relay teams, and Hannah Yemec also captured third in the 100 fly, finishing just 11 hundredths of a second behind the champion.
The Class 4A boys meet is set for 2 p.m. Monday at the North Charleston Aquatic Center.
