HSVB: Dolphins come up aces vs. JPII

Hilton Head Prep volleyball came on strong in the final two sets to clinch a 3-1 win over visiting John Paul II on Tuesday.

After winning the first set 25-18, the Dolphins dropped a hard-fought 26-24 decision to a scrappy Golden Warriors squad in the second set to pull even. But HHP turned it on for a 25-14 win in the third and cruised to a 25-6 triumph to clinch it.

The Dolphins used excellent serving to take control of the match, racking up 18 aces, and played well at the net with 10 blocks. Ashley Wilmot had a monster night for HHP with 10 kills, six aces, and seven digs, and Haylee Hopman added nine kills and a team-high 16 digs in a terrific all-around performance. Anna Scott added six kills and six blocks (four solo) in a strong showing up front, while Annie Braun had five aces and 11 digs, and Ella Clark and Gabby Bettez each dished out 18 assists.

Caroline Gilmour and Emily O’Sullivan each had four kills, and Karoline Rustad and Cayce Graves served up three aces each to lead the Golden Warriors.

HHP (4-1) will be back in action Friday, hosting a tri-match with Beaufort Academy and Providence Christian. JPII (1-1) plays at Memorial Day on Wednesday.
