Hilton Head High notched its fourth straight victory and handed John Paul II its first loss of the season with a 43-35 home win Tuesday.
Miley Ray led the Seahawks with 16 points, while Kenzie Ryan added eight and Janiya Ferebee had seven points.
“Tonight the team really pulled themselves together,” Ray said. “Everybody was really unselfish with the ball and we worked very hard.”
John Paul II’s Tkai DeVore notched a double-double with 10 points and 18 boards, but she was held well below her season average of 18.8 points. Taylor Michael scored seven points, and Jasmine Hamilton added five for the Golden Warriors.
“We had a tremendous night on defense,” HHIHS coach Sean Rochester said. “You can measure effort with steals and deflections, and our girls were all over the court tonight. Obviously Tkai is one of the best in our area and they are one of the better teams in SCISA. We knew we had a tough task in front of us. But our girls embraced the challenge and wanted to be the first team to beat them.”
The Golden Warriors have another non-region tune-up on tap this week to get back on track before jumping back into region play Tuesday at Hilton Head Prep.
“This was not our night offensively,” JPII coach Karen Floyd said. “We failed to convert on easy baskets and did not play our style of basketball. We learned a lot from tonight’s game.”
