Hilton Head High capped an emotional week with a convincing 43-14 win over visiting Savannah High on Friday.
Just hours after Seahawks coach B.J. Payne’s mother was laid to rest, his team opened the season with a rout of the Bluejackets.
After trailing 6-3 early, the Seahawks scored 40 consecutive points before Savannah High scored a late touchdown.
Sterling White caught a 28-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt 65 yards for a score, and Gaston Moore threw three touchdowns passes – one to White, a 14-yard strike to Jeff Gordon, and a 36-yard score to Nate Brown. Diante Richard broke a 44-yard touchdown run, and Will Frith scored on a 2-yard run.
The Seahawks (1-0) host St. James next Friday.
