The Beaufort County All-Stars were undone by one big inning Monday at the Dixie Boys World Series, as Mississippi broke open a close game with an 11-run fifth inning and handed the host team a 14-2 defeat.
Beaufort County brought back ace Cooper George on short rest after striking out 14 in a six-inning no-hitter in Saturday’s opener, and Mississippi got to him for two solo homers early. Another run scored on a wild pitch to put Beaufort County in an early 3-1 hole.
That’s where it stayed until the fifth, when Harrison Green drove in his second run of the game to pull the hosts within 3-2. Everything fell apart in the bottom of the inning, though, as Mississippi hit two more home runs and turned it into a rout.
Beaufort County will face Louisiana in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Tuesday with the winner advancing to the championship round. Mississippi is the only undefeated team remaining and will face one-loss Florida at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal.
