Two tourneys, two titles for Beaufort Academy boys basketball, and the Eagles have their sights set on another one next week.
The Eagles blitzed Branchville for a 30-1 run to start the game and cruised to a 67-18 victory over the Yellow Jackets in the championship game of the Cougar Classic on Wednesday in Walterboro.
Braydon Dineen led the way with 14 points for the Eagles, whose starters saw limited minutes in the blowout after BA opened up a 35-4 halftime lead. Gideon Watkins added 10 points off the bench, Gavin Midyette and Zeke Gonzalez scored nine each, and Amarion Wilson, Sully Gay, and Jaxen Porter each scored six in a balanced effort.
Wilson earned tournament MVP honors after putting up 19 points and 10 boards in a semifinal win over Hanahan, and Gay joined him on the all-tournament team.
In the consolation game, a short-handed Colleton County squad led by athletics director Wayne Alston battled to a 59-57 loss against Hanahan. The Cougars were without their entire coaching staff and several players after head coach Matt Mullins tested positive for COVID-19 and close contacts were required to quarantine until clearing protocols.
Mykeem Gant poured in 22 points, Deshaun Blocker added 14, and Tyshawn Hundley had 10 for the Cougars, and Gant was named to the all-tournament team along with Hanahan’s Malik Horry and Branchville’s Ronnie Nestor.
BA (16-3) plays in the Colleton Prep Holiday Classic next week, while Colleton County (4-6) plays in the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Sweet 16.
