HSBBB: Evander’s dagger helps Sharks flip script on Rebels

Just eight days after a 13-point loss at Effingham County, May River boys basketball earned its revenge with a thrilling 38-37 home win over the Rebels on Saturday.

Josh Evander’s 3-pointer gave the Sharks the lead with just under 30 seconds left, and the Rebels’ attempt at the buzzer clanked off the back of the rim to give May River a split of the season series.

The game was close throughout, with May River taking a four-point lead through one quarter and holding an 18-17 advantage at halftime. It was still a one-point game entering the fourth as the lead went back and forth. The Sharks were able to take advantage of their opportunities at the foul line, going 8-of-8.

Gavin Blocker scored 12 points to lead May River, while Evander added 11, and James Layman had nine. Khiry Wallace and Caleb Williams scored eight each for the Rebels.

May River (4-3) hosts Colleton County to open Region 7-4A play Tuesday.
