Lynda Young had a monster night, and Hilton Head High girls basketball held off a second-half challenge from host Beaufort Academy for a 43-39 road win Tuesday.
Young put up 21 points and 18 rebounds, Janiya Ferebee had a solid night with seven points and seven boards, and Anna Genova ripped down 11 rebounds to go with three points to help the Seahawks win a defensive struggle and snap a two-game skid.
The Seahawks raced out to a 10-0 lead just three minutes into the game before the Eagles settled in and outscored HHIHS 7-0 the rest of the quarter. BA continued to struggle to find its offense against a stingy Seahawks squad, and HHIHS took an 18-11 lead into halftime.
BA’s Mike’ala Washington caught fire in the third quarter, scoring eight of her team-high 17 points in the period, but the Eagles only trimmed one point of the margin thanks to Young’s dominance. The Eagles clawed within one with three minutes to play, but Young came up with a big bucket down the stretch to help seal it.
“We are so proud of how these girls battled tonight,” said first-year BA coach Andrew Ienuso. “They never quit and fought through several Hilton Head surges. Proud of how our team played tonight.”
The Seahawks (4-2) travel to Savannah Country Day on Saturday. BA (5-2) hosts Charleston Collegiate at 6 p.m. Friday in the first round of the BA Classic.
