The high school basketball season tipped off in the Lowco on Thursday, as the three-time defending SCISA 2A champion Hilton Head Christian Academy girls opened their campaign with a 53-41 road win over St. Vincent’s Academy in Savannah.
HHCA jumped out to 10-0 start with Devon Yarde and Tamya Hutchinson combining for 13 points in the first quarter, and Lily Chase knocked down a 3-pointer to close out the half with a 29-12 lead.
The Eagles extended the lead to 39-20 at the end of the third quarter, and the margin was as large as 53-22 before HHCA coach Kenny Conroy pulled the reins.
Yarde led a balanced HHCA attack with 14 points, the Estill transfer Hutchinson added 12, and Abby Peduzzi posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jaida Grayson added six points, and Skylar Smith dished out six assists for the Eagles.
HHCA (1-0) travels to Heathwood Hall to compete in the Hoffman and Hoffman Thanksgiving Tournament next week, playing Hammond School at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Chapin High at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
