Senior Student-Athlete Spotlight: Daniela Gularte, Bluffton girls soccer

High school seniors competing in spring sports are in danger of having their high school athletics careers cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They were supposed to be out representing their schools, creating highlights and memories, and … well … giving us something to write about. So we’re going to write about them. This is the Senior Student-Athlete Spotlight.

When you’re a leader and a captain, sometimes you have to get tough with your teammates. But when you’re a leader and a captain, you know you also have to keep the team morale up.

Daniela Gularte found a solution for when she has to bark at her Bluffton High School soccer teammates.

“When I yell, it sometimes comes out in a British accent,” Gularte says. “I can yell at them without hurting their feelings that way. It’s very effective.”

Gularte doesn’t always put up the eye-popping statistics to match some of her higher-profile teammates, but she was just as critical to the Bobcats’ success.

A versatile player who saw time at every position as a junior — including goalie — Gularte was holding down the back line with great success to start her senior season. The Bobcats had posted three shutouts in their first six games before the season came to an abrupt halt.

It’s unclear whether Gularte will get another chance to put on the Bobcat uniform, but she does plan to keep playing the game she picked up at age 5 to emulate her mother. She has been accepted to several colleges — including Georgia Southern, and Charleston Southern — and is exploring the option of joining the soccer program at one of them.
