Sand Shark Soccer Off To Historic Start

USCB’s women’s soccer team is off to its best start in the program’s nine-year history.

The Sand Sharks went on the road to rout Converse College 8-1 on Wednesday, improving to 4-0 and moving within one victory of matching the program’s longest winning streak set in 2013.

USCB trailed for the first time all season when Converse broke through in the 18th minute for a 1-0 lead — and the first goal the Sand Sharks have allowed in 2019. The Sand Sharks tied it just over two minutes later and added three more goals before halftime before finding the back of the net four times in the second half. Julie Gherardi scored two goals, and six other players tallied one each for USCB.

The Sand Sharks have outscored their first four opponents 21-1, and senior Anna Gignilliat has been the biggest offensive contributor. Gignilliat already has seven goals, which is tied for fifth on the program’s single-season list, and she sits third on the career points list with 37.

USCB hosts Milligan (Tenn.) for a noon kickoff Monday at Fin Land Field.
