May River’s Owen Andrews and Emma Peluso claimed individual titles to lead the Sharks to third-place finishes in both the boys and girls divisions Saturday at the Saucony XC Kickoff Classic at Savannah’s Daffin Park.
Peluso edged West Forsyth’s Isabel Ptacek by less than half a second, crossing the line in 19:27 to win the girls 5K race. Ashlyn Babkiewicz (12th, 20:18), Gracyn Drury (17th, 21:10), Victoria Sosa (29th, 22:01), and Hailey Horton (22:09, 31st) rounded out the scoring for the Sharks, who finished third among 16 teams.
Bluffton finished sixth with Ava Gerschutz (16th, 21:05) and Kaitlyn McDonough (22nd, 21:21) leading the way, and Izzy Hipple (54th, 24:15) led Holy Trinity to a 13th-place finish.
Andrews easily won the boys 5K, finishing in 15:54, 11 seconds ahead of Pace Academy’s Edward Blaha. Colin Keck finished eighth in 16:36, and Mills Campbell (21st, 17:07), DJ Robinson (24th, 17:25), and Sean Hamby (32nd, 17:46) rounded out the scoring for May River, which was third among 24 teams.
Bluffton finished 10th, led by Nicholas Cunningham (36th, 17:58); Collin Durham (28th, 17:34) led Holy Trinity to 12th; and Kelon Reynolds (87th, 20:17) led John Paul II to 19th place.
