HSBBB: Seahawks hang on for tough road win, snap BA streak at 8

Hilton Head High boys basketball withstood a tough test on the road to knock off a red-hot Beaufort Academy squad Tuesday, winning 72-63 to end the Eagles’ eight-game winning streak.

The Eagles stymied the Seahawks early and led 12-9 after one quarter, but Hilton Head adjusted and found ways to attack BA’s stingy defense. The Seahawks capitalized off 28 BA turnovers — including 20 Seahawk steals — turning them into 31 points, and used their size advantage to produce 44 points in the paint.

Hilton Head pulled ahead 27-22 at halftime and pushed the pace in the second half, pulling out to a nine-point advantage after three quarters and holding the line down the stretch.

Alex Smith put up an efficient 21 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line and gave a game-changing effort on defense with six steals and six deflections  to lead the Seahawks. Josh Hennum added 15 points and seven boards, Zac Morris had a monster night with 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two steals, and eight deflections, and Karyce Campbell fought through a tough shooting night to record eight points, five boards, four assists, and six steals.

Freshman big man Amarion Wilson had another strong showing for BA with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Sully Gay added 10 points, eight boards, and three assists. Timmy Horgan splashed four 3-pointers for 12 points, and Gavin Midyette added 11 points for the Eagles.

HHIHS (4-2) travels to Benedictine on Saturday. BA (8-3) hosts Bluffton on Wednesday.
