John Paul II got off to a disastrous start and never recovered in a 59-12 loss at Bethesda Academy on Friday.
The Golden Warriors found themselves down 23-0 before the end of the first quarter and couldn’t get back in it.
Reco Anderson rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and returned a fumble 34 yards for a score. Josh Horton made seven tackles to anchor the defense.
“I feel like the last few weeks we had been steadily improving, but we kind of took a step back tonight,” JPII coach Chris Myers said. “Bethesda came out clicking from the start. We hurt ourselves with penalties when we did have some good things going, but next week starts a new season.”
JPII (0-4) opens region play at home against Hilton Head Prep next Friday.
