HSGBB: Freshmen help BA breeze into semifinals

Beaufort Academy’s girls raced out to a big lead early and cruised to a 60-41 win over Richard Winn Academy in the SCISA 1A quarterfinals Tuesday at Heathwood Hall.

With senior leader Amelia Huebel limited to four points due to foul trouble, the Eagles’ young stars took the lead. Mike’Ala Washington scored 17 points, fellow freshman Tahleea Heyward added 14, and Emily Ann Hiers had 13 for BA.

Heyward scored 11 of her 14 in the first half, and Washington and Hiers took over after the break. Washington had nine of her 17 in the second half, and Hiers scored eight of her 13 after halftime.

“I think we played well overall,” BA coach Lillian Aldred said. “There were a couple of times we could have capitalized on what they were giving us inside, and we didn’t do it, but overall I was very happy.”

The Eagles (20-3) will face Patrick Henry in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Wilson Hall.

“We lost to Patrick Henry two years ago in the semifinals,” Aldred said, “so we can’t wait to play them again.”
