We’ve come to the end of another football season in the Lowco, and this year’s edition may have been one of the most special yet. We saw a pair of state champions defend their titles and another team run the gauntlet all the way to the final weekend in Columbia. We witnessed a Lowco star crowned as the top player in the state, and a number of others earn recognition for their hard work on and off the field. We’ll always look back on this 2021 season, and especially these moments and stories that captivated us over a memorable fall.
The Lowcountry’s marquee high school hoops tournament is back. After taking 2020 off due to COVID-19 concerns, the Seahawk Holiday Classic returns Monday through Wednesday at Hilton Head Island High School with a star-studded 16-team field.
With his Whale Branch boys basketball team’s undefeated record on the line, Jashaun Gillison wasn’t about to let a nasty cramp keep him off the court. Gillison scored six of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, including a huge 3-pointer and a trio of free throws down the stretch, and Antoine Singleton put up 19 points to help the Warriors hold off a scrappy Battery Creek team for a 52-48 home win Saturday.
Kiara Wilson drained a go-ahead free throw and Genesis Wilson sealed it with a three-pointer in overtime to propel Battery Creek girls basketball to a 36-32 road victory over rival Whale Branch on Saturday in Seabrook.
“The Firm” of Dennison, Dennison and Odom brought its closing arguments in Beaufort High boys basketball’s crosstown rivalry with Battery Creek on Friday, combining for 50 points, 37 rebounds, and 14 steals as the Eagles completed a season sweep of the Dolphins with a 70-55 home win on Kirkland Court.
Sophia Felix knocked down three clutch triples and the Battery Creek girls basketball went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach as the Dolphins defeated archrival Beaufort High 38-25 Friday night on Kirkland Court.
Hilton Head High’s boys took some punches early, but Chane Brown’s lockdown defense came alive to soar the Seahawks past their Bridge Bowl rivals Friday night. Karyce Campbell shined for the second straight game with 19 points, and the Seahawks turned on a second-half surge to down Bluffton on the road 60-37.
Bluffton’s terrific sophomore trio was too much for its rivals across the bridge Friday, as the Bobcats topped Hilton Head High 39-34 at home thanks to a stellar performance from Madi Washington.
