HS Swimming: May River Girls, Bluffton Boys Top County Rivals; 9 BA Swimmers Qualify For State

May River’s girls swimming team and Bluffton’s boys placed atop the team standings among four teams at the Beaufort Invitational on Thursday.

Allie Ingram (200 IM, 100 fly), Alondra Janicek (50 free, 100 free), and Shelby Gourley (200 free, 500 free) each won two events for May River’s girls, who dominated the relays. Ingram (back), Alora Orr (breast), Hannah Yemec (fly) and Janicek (free) won the 200 medley relay; Yemec, Jacine Gore, Courtney Alewine, and Yael Echeverria won the 200 free relay; and Orr, Janicek, Ingram, and Gourley won the 400 free relay.

Bluffton’s boys edged May River for the top spot, aided by a thrilling win in the 400 free relay to cap the night. The team of Kegan Brandt, Jack Camino, Sam Schwabauer, and Charlie Deaton edged May River by less than a second to win the race.

Brandt (200 free, 500 free) and Schwabauer (200 IM, 100 breast) each won two events, and Mason Engler won the 100 free. Camino (back), Schwabauer (breast), Brandt (fly), and Deaton (free) won the 200 medley relay for the Sharks.

Clayton Boyles (50 free), Joey Ingram (100 fly), and Matheo Velasquez (100 back) each won an event for May River’s boys.

Bluffton’s girls finished third overall with Tia Reed leading the way with a win in the 100 breast. Ava Gerschutz placed second in the 500 free and the 200 free, and Nagi Reed was second in the individual medley.

Beaufort High won two events, as McKenzie Daniel claimed the girls 100 backstroke and the Eagles won the boys 200 free relay (Allen Szczepek, Jacob Denton, Anthony Szczepek, Davis Martin).

Beaufort Academy had nine swimmers post qualifying times for the SCISA state meet — Quinn Fleming (100 and 200 free), Michela Gianni (50 and 100 free), James Hart (50 and 100 free), Ashton Bell (100 back, 200 IM), Jenny Harry (50 free), Emma Grace Dinkins (50 and 100 free), Joseph Patterson (50 and 100 free), Katherine Taylor (100 free and 100 breast), and Eli Summa (50 and 100 free).

The next meet for Bluffton and May River is Wednesday at Island Rec Center against Hilton Head High and Hilton Head Christian Academy. BA will compete in HHCA’s meet Saturday at Island Rec Center.
