HS Soccer: Sharks Slam Swansea, Advance To Third Round

May River’s boys set a program-record for goals in a 14-1 rout of Swansea in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs Thursday.

The Sharks scored an own-goal after a Tony Rodriguez save on a penalty kick to give the visiting Tigers an early lead, but it was all May River from there. Mikey Chappelear scored the first of his two goals less than five minutes later to tie it, and Joel Fleek scored four of his five goals in the first half as the Sharks took a 7-1 lead into halftime.

Chris Hernandez and Adrian Villalon had two goals apiece for the Sharks, and Conner Golden, Brayan Silva, and Sean Hamby added a goal apiece.

Rodriguez only had to make three saves, as the Sharks held Swansea without a shot in the second half.

May River (20-3) hosts Bishop England on Saturday in the Lower State semifinals. It’s a rematch of the championship game of the preseason Charleston Shootout, which the Bishops won 4-0 on Feb. 18.
