HSBB: Cherry Helps JPII Boys Hold Off Lions In Region Opener

John Paul II’s boys opened region play with a 58-53 win at St. Andrew’s on Friday, avenging two losses last season to the Lions.

Freshman Amere Cherry scored 23 points to lead the Golden Warriors, including hitting 6-of-6 from the foul line in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

“That’s a really big win for us,” JPII coach Stacy Benedik said. “We lost to them twice last year by a total of nine points so to be able to get out to a lead and then make the plays down the stretch to seal it is a very big step.”

John Paul (3-5, 1-0) hosts Andrew Jackson Academy on Thursday.
