The Week 9 RBC Heritage HSFB Player of the Week Is …

With another stacked ballot of nominees for the Week 9 RBC Heritage High School Football Player of the Week, three players separated from the pack.

Before we get to this week’s fan vote winner, allow me a moment to recognize two players who show up on this list every week but never seem to get much love at the ballot box.

I’m talking about John Paul II’s Zack Doe and Whale Branch’s Irvin Mulligan, who are two of the best running backs I’ve seen this season at any level. Maybe it’s a case of voter fatigue – I feel like I nominate Doe and Mulligan every week – or maybe it’s simply that fans have come to expect them to put up 100+ rushing (or in Doe’s case, 200+) and at least a couple of touchdowns every Friday night.

Any online vote, though, essentially turns into a popularity contest, and Battery Creek High School fans know how to get out the vote when their Dolphins are nominated. This week, BCHS running back Zacheus Magwood held off Whale Branch quarterback C.J. Brown in a close race, winning by less than a 2 percent margin, with Beaufort High’s Trae Heyward in third.

For the record, my vote would have gone to Magwood’s teammate – quarterback Jordan Gwyn – but the people have spoken. Congrats to Zacheus Magwood, the Week 9 RBC Heritage High School Football Player of the Week – and a lock for the All-Name Team.
