When John Paul II last took the field back in Week 0 at Hilton Head Prep, the Golden Warriors were without two-way standout Mark Knight. It turns out he makes a difference.
Knight caught a pair of touchdown passes from Christian Tilton and picked off two passes on defense, and Jackson Ogden rushed for 104 yards and two TDs on 11 carries to lead JPII to a 40-6 rout of visiting Memorial Day on Friday.
The Golden Warriors didn’t need to go to the air often, as Ogden gashed the Matadors and Tony Hill added 20 yards and a touchdown on just two carries. Tilton was 3-of-6 for 79 yards with two touchdowns and a pick, and 76 of those yards came on the two touchdown strikes to Knight, one of which was a long bomb up the left sideline.
JPII’s defense showed huge improvement from the opening loss to Hilton Head Prep, shutting down the Matadors and scoring a defensive touchdown when Sebastian Slusne pounced on a fumble in the end zone. Peter Hughes had 15 tackles and three tackles for loss, and Michael Carbone added 13 tackles and one tackle for loss to lead the outstanding defensive effort, while Sam Rembold contributed nine tackles.
JPII (1-1) travels to Pinewood Prep for a difficult road test Thursday.
