HSGBB: Bobcats hold off scrappy Sharks to retain top spot (+📸 +📹)

Bluffton’s girls had to take a few punches from a rapidly-improving May River team on Friday, but the Bobcats swung back in the second half of a 34-26 road win to remain undefeated in Region 7-4A play.

Tacoya Heyward scored a game-high 16 points in a physical, defensive struggle to help the Bobcats solidify their hold on the top spot in the region, which comes with an automatic playoff berth and a first-round bye in the region tournament starting Feb. 12.

Samari Mitchell added six points for the Bobcats, who trailed 14-12 at halftime before closing the third quarter with a 7-0 run to open up a 27-20 advantage, then held off a late charge from the Sharks.

Jordan Bigham had eight points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks to lead the Sharks, while Charlotte Van den Heuvel added eight points and four boards, and Morgan Scott had six points and nine rebounds.

The Bobcats (6-2, 5-0) host James Island on Tuesday.

The Sharks (7-4, 4-2) host Lucy Beckham on Feb. 8.
