All-Time At USCB: First meeting

For the second consecutive year, the USCB women’s soccer team will open its season against Life University when the Sand Sharks kick off the 2017 campaign at 3 p.m. Tuesday. If Fin Land Field is unplayable due to heavy rain Monday evening, the game could be moved to Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville. USCB claimed a 2-0 road win over the Running Eagles last season to kick off what turned out to be the best season in program history. The Sand Sharks set program records for wins (10), goals (40), and fewest goals allowed (34) and earned the first postseason win in history.

The Sand Sharks return six starters from last year’s team, including all-time leading scorer Hayley Piña and fellow seniors Karen Pimentel and MJ Orduña. The returners hope to quickly mesh with a talented group of newcomers that includes NCAA Division I transfer Rileigh Olsen, NJCAA All-American Melissa Fichtner, and promising freshmen Allison Schaffer and Hannah Salus, among others.

FIN FACTS

• All home games this season will be broadcast at no charge to viewers via the Sand Shark Gameday Network on Stretch Internet.

• USCB is 2-3-1 all-time in season-openers.

• Senior F Hayley Piña enters the season as the Sand Sharks’ all-time leader in goals (23), assists (13) and points (59), and she ranks second with four career game-winning goals, one behind Alexa Muffley.

• Sophomore GK Moa Johansson enters the season as USCB’s all-time leader in goals against average after posting a 1.53 GAA last season, the best single-season mark in program history.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

The Running Eagles already have matched last season’s win total by earning victories in their first two matches of 2017. Life has posted shutouts in its first two contests, beating Brewton-Parker 2-0 and Montreat 4-0. Junior F Josie Davis has accounted for three of the team’s six goals.
